At least thirteen passengers killed and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
