In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
